Waushara County Health Department is reaching out to remind residence. January is Radon Action Month. Throughout January, you can get a reduced-cost radon test kit from the health department.
Radon is a naturally-occurring radioactive gas that comes from soil and rock. It can enter your house and build up to harmful levels. Radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer in the US and the leading cause among non-smokers. It does not matter whether you have a new or old home; a home with a basement, crawl-space, or slab; or even that your neighbor’s radon level is low. You could still have high levels of radon in your home. The only way to know is to TEST!
Please stop at the health department to pick up a short-term radon test kit. Follow instructions that come with the kit, place it in your home for 2 days and then mail it to the lab. If you pick up your kit in January, the cost is reduced from $7 to only $5, plus shipping to the lab. The typical cost to ship (e.g., USPS priority mail) is about $8.
Please spread the word … Residents of Waushara, Green Lake, Marquette, and Portage Counties can get radon test kits at any of these health departments. A fact sheet is attached. Feel free to contact me if you have any questions about radon or testing.
